They may have a slower response time, which can limit how well they preform in certain situations, like while driving. When sleep deprived adults need to have energy immediately, they often turn to using amphetamines and dangerous street drugs, such as cocaine or crystal meth.

Some studies show that the long term effects of insomnia may increase a persons risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Premature-aging can also be the result of long term sleep disturbances. The body uses sleep to renew and rejuvenate itself. If the body does not get sleep, it is not able to rebalance itself, detoxify itself, or re-boot its immune system. During the day, when the body is awake, cortisol is produced. This natural anti-inflammatory is designed to limit natural cell growth and repair. However, while the body is sleeping, cortisol levels are allowed to drop, which permits natural cell growth and repair to take place. To prevent abnormal cell growth from occurring, the body releases melatonin (another hormone) during the night.
